Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is a grant-in-aid Deemed to be University under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, established on June 3, 2005 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Named after Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the father of the Indian nuclear programme, HBNI serves as the apex academic umbrella bringing together premier DAE R&D centres and grant-in-aid institutions. Its constituent institutions (CIs) and off-campus centre (OCC) include Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC, Mumbai), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR, Kalpakkam), Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT, Indore), Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC, Kolkata), Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP, Kolkata), Institute for Plasma Research (IPR, Gandhinagar), Institute of Physics (IOP, Bhubaneswar), Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI, Prayagraj), Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc, Chennai), Tata Memorial Centre (TMC, Mumbai), and National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER, Bhubaneswar). HBNI focuses on high-end postgraduate and doctoral education across physical, chemical, life, mathematical, engineering, medical and health sciences, as well as applied systems analysis.
