Alagappa University was established in May 1985 by an Act of the Tamil Nadu State Legislature (Tamil Nadu Act 23 of 1985) by bringing together institutions founded by renowned philanthropist Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar. Recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Sections 2(f) and 12(B), it is classified as a Category-I State University by MHRD-UGC. The university functions through 4 faculties (Arts, Science, Management, and Education), housing 44 departments, 9 centers, and 2 constituent colleges (Alagappa University College of Education and Alagappa University College of Physical Education) alongside 46 affiliated colleges across Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts. With significant research strengths in Nanotechnology, Bioelectronics, Structural Biology, Marine Sciences, and Advanced Materials, the university has received major funding under DST-PURSE, DST-FIST, UGC-SAP, and RUSA 2.0.
